|️Mass protests have erupted in the eastern Turkish province of Van following local elections over the weekend.

Abdullah Zeidan, a candidate from the pro-Kurdish DEM party, won the region, but the authorities said he had no legal right to take office because of irregularities in the vote count. They want to give the victory to a representative of the ruling party.

There is now a ban on mass rallies in the province, but Zeidan's supporters were undeterred. Police broke up the rally with water cannons.
