Potential Long-Term Pipeline Outage Poses Strategic Challenges for Ukraine

The explosion on the gas pipeline in the Kharkov region.

The incident occurred on the main gas pipeline that connects Ukraine's largest gas field, "Shebelinskoye," with gas transportation system.

This is very important, as the field produces approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year, i.e., over half of Ukraine’s gas production. If the pipeline is out of service for a long time, it will be impossible to fill up Ukraine’s gas storage facilities. And if one considers potential strikes on the two main underground gas storage facilities in Western Ukraine, the picture becomes very bleak for Ukraine and very interesting for Russia.
