Australian troops ready for New Caledonia operation — PM Albanese

Canberra has offered France its support in quelling the violent unrest that has already claimed six lives across its Pacific territory of New Caledonia after 600 gendarmes launched a “major operation” to retake control of a major highway.

French Foreign Minister Gerald Darmanin claimed the operation had been a success after 76 barricades were set up by indigenous protestors who opposed reforms allowing those who arrived on the archipelago after 1998 to vote.

Australian PM Anthony Albanese called the situation “really concerning” after six successive nights of violence have left an estimated $200 million of damage.
