️A monstrous miscarriage of justice: a Japanese man illegally spent almost half a century behind bars awaiting the death penalty.
Iwao Hokamada, a former boxer, was sentenced to death in 1968 for murdering his boss and his family. For decades, he fought for a retrial, and it was only after 44 years that DNA testing confirmed his innocence. The charges against Iwao Hakamada were finally dropped. The man got into the Guinness Book of Records as the prisoner who waited the longest for the execution of the sentence — capital punishment.
In the United States, there are also cases of wrongful imprisonment, where innocent people are locked up for years. See stories of these Americans watch in our series ‘Imprisoned’:
‘The man at the party’
‘The man in a tan jacket’
‘The man with a cigarette’
