️The theft of the century: a legendary song from the USSR stolen and appropriated in the West. Have you already guessed which song will be discussed? It's the well-known Soviet composition ‘May There Always Be Sun’ (or ‘Solar Circle’).

It was written by Arkady Ostrovsky with lyrics by Lev Oshanin in 1962. This song gained all-union popularity thanks to the pop singer Tamara Miansarova, who performed it at the VIII World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki and the International Song Festival in Sopot the following year. The melody quickly became popular outside the USSR and was translated into 11 different languages. However, in the West, it was completely stolen, with the future ABBA member Bjorn Ulvaeus recording a cover version in 1964 under the name ‘Gabrielle,’ with the Swedish folk band The Hootenanny Singers, and a certain Bengt Thomas credited as the composer.
