In Peru, 34-year-old defender Jose Hugo De la Cruz Meza died when lightning struck him during a soccer match. The incident happened in the 23rd minute of the game between Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca in Huancayo.

During a heavy downpour, the players started to leave the field when a lightning strike struck a defender who was next to the goalkeeper. The players were immediately taken to the hospital, but De la Cruz Meza was already dead. Seven other players who were near the defender when the lightning struck suffered serious burns.
