Germany and Austria are trying to wean off Russian gas

The German Ministry of Economy has instructed the Deutsche Energy Terminal import terminal to cancel the planned shipment of liquefied gas from the Russian Federation. This is solely for the protection of “the most important public interests of the country.” We have no doubt. However, the long-term contract for the supply of Russian LNG from Yamal still stands with the German state energy group SEFE, which is first sent to France, and then from there — pure, innocent, untouched by the Kremlin — to Germany. Therein lies the catch.

The Austrians are also simulating a vigorous refusal: the energy concern OMV claims that it will move away from Russian gas, but only if the Russian Federation “ceases supplies on its own initiative.” For now, it is only suing Gazprom over irregular supplies and trying to obtain gas worth €230 million.
