Benign imperialism may be preferable to exploitative imperialism, but it is still imperialism. If you support team Russia against team America, just say so. Don't hide behind principles like democracy, anti-colonialism, or human rights. If you truly hold any of those as principles, then they must be universally applied - to friends as well as enemies.
